The LCD monitor that I use as a display for Android TV was not working. The power indicator lit but there was no activity on the screen. The power supply did not supply a stable 5V to the LCD controller. It was because two capacitors on the power board went bad. I fixed the monitor by replacing the bad capacitors.

Troubleshooting Dell E177Fpb LCD Screen Monitor when the Monitor power LED is on at blue but we unable to see the data on the screen. If we use the flashlight on the screen we able to see data on the screen.

we must know what is the problem and we need know how works the monitor. We are going to talk about how work the monitor on LCD Screen.

The LCD Screen Including the two Lamps on top and bottom that the lamps make the light on LCD Screen we able to see the DATA on the LCD Screen, what happening if the lamps don't be on?

That's easy to answer. If you have an LCD Screen without a backlight that means we have DATA on LCD Screen, but we are unable to see the DATA because the LCD Screen is dark. We need to know what happens on the LCD Screen when it is dark.

Possible causes:
1- One or two lamps are spoiled
2- Inverter unable to make voltage that needs to turn on the lamps.
3- Power board doesn't provide +12V to start the Inverter.

These three causes of backlight problems can be further explained: For example in number 1:
A) The Lamp has been burnt.
B) The Lamp's connector doesn't connect probably.
C) The Lamp's cable is broken.

We have to check these possible causes one by one to find the reason for the fault.

In this video, you see the bulged capacitors. You can find them easily by looking at the board. After replacement of the Capacitor we are done with the troubleshooting. With this knowledge, we able to repair all monitors that don't have a backlight. I further explain more about the other two reasons in another post. Please check it out by one click:

This was a PM that I received from uranium235678 and I found it to be very helpful.

I am by no means an electronics expert, I simply like to tinker and happened to fix several of these monitors. After fixing half a dozen or so I recorded it thinking that someone else must have experienced this problem too.

From uranium235678:

look at tutorials on youtube about cap replacement

you are lucky cause powerboards usually have good quality solder, but if you do cap replacement on motherboards or any Chinese ROHS compliant crap, you will have a bad time if you use the the methods you did with this board

you need some good 60/40 leaded & flux solder, as well, an actual flux pin can be helpful. 'Wet' each joint first with the new solder, then 'walk and heat' the cap out. I just did on a terrible compaq motherboard last night and probably 4/13 holes I had to use a sewing needle and my iron on high to clear them

I usually cut the leads before I put it in and hold it in place with a finger, others do not, its your call

I used something called a Hakko 808 ($~100) to clear the solder holes, which is easy on power boards, not as easy on motherboards, but still effective if you have practice

good choice of nichicon. There is other factors to take into account other than UF, in power boards, this is usually ripple current. In motherboads, Ripple and ESR. You can go up on voltage, but if you go up too high on uf, problems will be had

By now other members of badcaps.net might have contacted you cause your video was posted there, and they might be a little more insulting than me. Hopefully not. I'm a mod there and if any of them were asshats give me names and i'll try to send out some warnings

keep practicing, but try some different techniques. Also maybe a good weller varible temp iron, and medium-chisel tips to really transfer heat over a greater area on the joint. The less time your tip sits on the joint before it melts, the better, which is why I like varible temp irons, I can set it rather low for power boards, higher ~550f for motherboards and rohs (no lead) boards

Apparently I miss spoke at some point, yes they are capacitors, not resistors. Thank you to the one who pointed that out.

For such an expensive monitor (when new), the design is crippled by STUPID choices, probably made by a bean-counter. (The primary unit failure was due to crap no-name chinese junk electrolytic capacitors.)

If you turn on your LCD monitor and strange things happen; for instance, all you have to look at is an empty/black screen, or it takes longer and longer for your LCD monitor to start, or the picture is unreadable, replacing the capacitors will probably help restore your LCD monitor back to normal.

This video shows how to take apart the LCD monitor, examine the capacitors, remove the capacitors, insert new ones, solder the capacitors in, and put the LCD monitor back together.

I've repaired many of these, they're very common around here. It just figures that monitors that don't get bad caps break in some other way.

The panel in it was also quite a good one, by far on the better side of 17" 5:4 TN panels.
