How should everyone distribute DTS audio? I hate CD images.
Are we suppose to insert the CD each time we want to hear it??
Guess that rules out playlists for the people who use their
PC's for the entertainment system!!!
Anyways, here is my attempt
===========================
From what I know, DTS audio is 2 encoded channels of audio or AKA, "white noise".
(I like to see people who don't know what DTS is, complain about the "noise".)
haha...
You HAVE TO HAVE DTS HARDWARE to decode the 2 encoded channels into the 5.1
channels of enjoyable audio.
OR....
1. RIP the DTS CD into .wav files. The .wav files will hold 2 channels
of "white noise" (2 encoded channels).
2. RENAME them to .dts, and use software to decode the 2 channel track into 5.1 channels.
(foobar2000 with added dts component, or stock VLC media player works for me).
The software see's the .dts and knows it needs to decode it (supported software of course).
Done deal, make a torrent and seed!!!
About Equipment and quality
===========================
If you only have 2 speakers on your PC (stereo), you should still be able to
listen to the .dts wav file, software decoded, but don't expect to be blown away by the quality.
Although, it does sound pretty good.
If you have a digital sound card, and a digital "DTS" amplifyer, you may want
to change the files back to .wav so your software outputs 2 channel "white noise"
which your amp will hear and decode it.
If you have a Dolby Digital sound card in your PC, (like me), use the software
to decode the .dts file, let the sound card take the 5.1 channels from the software
and output Dolby Digital, and enjoy virtually the exact same as a DTS system. I've never
heard a "TRUE" DTS hardware system, but my DTS software decoding and Dolby Digital output
system SOUNDS GREAT and must be what DTS sounds like!!!!!!
Conclusion
==========
This seems simplest for me and should make everyone happy since it'll work for
all hardware setups. If you have 5.1 support in any way, great. If not, you
can still hear the audio.
2 encoded CH .dts ---> software decode to 5.1 ---> 2 channel sound card and speakers (lost 3.1 channels)
2 encoded ch .dts ---> software decode to 5.1 ---> any supported 5.1 soundcard/setup
2 encoded CH .wav ---> not software decoded ---> 2 channels digital soundcard output ---> DTS supported Amp
I've spent a lot of time trying to figure this DTS stuff out without simply settling for a
DTS amp, and a DTS DVD player. I wanted to do DTS on my PC using my Dolby hardware. Hopefully
this little rant helps a few others that are trying to do what I did.
