Taiwan motherboard makers expected to see mixed shipment growth in 1Q10

First-tier motherboard makers Asustek Computer and Gigabyte Technology are expected to see about 10% sequential growth in their own-brand motherboard shipments in the first quarter of 2010, while Micro-Star International (MSI) is likely to stay flat and Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) drop 10%, according to market watchers.
Asustek is expected to ship 5.2-5.5 million own-brand motherboards in the first quarter of 2010, up 4-10% sequentially, followed by 6.5 million units in the second quarter. Total shipments for the year are targeted to reach 25 million units. Of the company's annual shipments, 8.3 million units are expected to ship to the China market, the market watchers noted.
Gigabyte is expected to ship nearly four million own-brand motherboards in the first quarter with a sequential growth of 10%. The company is also targeting to ship a total of 17-18 million own-brand motherboards in 2010.
Meanwhile, Micro-Star International (MSI) expects shipments to drop slightly to two million units and Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) estimates shipments of 1.8 million units for a 10% decrease, according to industry sources.
ECS shipped about eight million own-brand motherboards in 2009, mostly mid-range and entry-level models.
MSI is expected to maintain its fourth-quarter 2009 shipment levels of two million own-brand motherboards in the first quarter of 2010, the market watchers noted.
MSI shipped five million motherboards (including OEM orders) in the third quarter of 2009, 3.8 million units in the fourth and a total of 17 million motherboards for the whole year.
