Elpida announced that it has worked out DDR3 chip delivering a speed up to 2.5Gbps(as clocking at 2500MHz). Bandwidth will boost to 20GB/s with a single channel.
The new DDR3 SDRAM uses a copper interconnect technology instead of aluminum. According to Elpida, the new technology delivers a higher transmission rate as well as lower power comsuption. It has a speed ranging from 667Mbps to 2.5Gbps. It can run at a normal 2.5Gbps at 1.5V, and also 1.8Gbps at 1.2V.
The chips are targeted for high-end PCs and servers. Sample shipments are expected to begin by the end of August, but we should wait for a while to see the chips used to make RAMs.
