Samsung UD590 28-inch 4K monitor goes on sale for $699

Samsung has just announced the availability of their UD590 28-inch monitor which is capable of delivering 4K (3840?2160) resolution. There are quite a lot of 4K monitors available in the market today but only a few of them are comparatively affordable. The Samsung UD590 (product number: U28D590D) is one of those; it?s MSRP is $699 however its selling for slightly higher than that.

There are a few other 28-inch 4K monitors available in this market but the Dell P2815Q will be compared most of the time with the new Samsung UD590 because it also goes for the same price. Even though both of these displays use the TN panel, which is considered inferior to the IPS panel found in the high end displays, the Samsung?s UD590 is a more attractive option mostly due to its higher refresh rate. At the full 4K resolution, Dell?s display is caped at only 30Hz only which essentially limits the gaming to 30 FPS however Samsung?s display offer up to 60Hz refresh rate on full resolution (resulting in up to 60 FPS) but that?s possible with DisplayPort only. With HDMI, it is also capped at 30Hz with 4K resolution. It comes with one DisplayPort and two HDMI ports; there are no DVI ports.

There is something unusual about the TN panel of Samsung UD950. According to the official specifications provided by Samsung, this display can output 10-bit colors however we?ve never heard of a 10-bit TN panel before. This kind of color output is required by professionals and the options are very limited if you are in market for such displays. These display have IPS panels and cost well over $1000 (that too with 2560?1440 resolution). Similarly, 10-bit IPS displays with 4K resolution cost as much as $2500. So there is not much known as yet about this new panel until we see some detailed reviews. Till then we will have to live by what Samsung has provided us.

The narrow viewing angles and color reproduction are usually a concern with TN panels and this concern gets bigger when you?ve a display as large as 28-inch one. Samsung UD590 claims 170/160 degree viewing angles. However, according to early adopters who posted their reviews on Amazon, both of these issues are not that much noticeable with the UD590.

The Samsung UD590 offers 1 billion color support , 370cd/m2 of brightness and 1ms GTG response times . It comes with a very sleek black and silver design with brushed aluminium finish. Although, Samsung claims to offer some tilt adjustments, the people who have already bought one say that adjustments are next to none.

Even considering the little that we know about the Samsung UD590 so far, it still seems to the best option if you want a 28-inch 4K monitor and you are on a tight budget.
