The Radeon R9 390 in its Asus DirectCU 3 guise (+50MHz core) takes on a mildly overclocked GTX 970 (+25MHz core), the MSI R9 390X (+50MHz core)
and the reference R9 290 (fans at 80% to stop throttling).
At 1080p, the contest with the GTX 970 is pretty fierce. The 390 is faster in some games,
slower in others, but it kicks out a lot more heat and uses a lot more power.

And that's really where the inevitable GTX 970 comparisons should begin.
The Nvidia card basically comes in virtually every shape and size available -
the model we use is a tiny Zotac version.
That product has a miniscule factory overclock (+25MHz to the core),
but is more notable for its diminutive dimensions,
allowing it to fit inside most of the mini-ITX gaming cases available.
