AMD today announced in a blog post that it will no longer be focusing on its Mantle 1.0 gaming API that was announced around a year and a half ago. Instead, the company has suggested developers to divert their attention to DirectX12 or glNext.
The progress with DirectX12 and glNext is said to be the main reason why AMD will not pursue further development of its Mantle API in the future. However, it will continue to support the Mantle API with all the resources at their disposal. One of the projects that will receive AMD?s support is Battlefield Hardline.
AMD was expected to release Mantle 1.0 public SDK soon but the blog post has confirmed that this will not happen now. Mantle?s main advantage was the ability to use CPU cores effectively with low-level command buffer submission. Since this has now been incorporated with DirectX12 as well as glNext, the future of Mantle wasn?t going to be very bright anyway.
AMD will be revealing more about the future of the Mantle API as well as the future of PC graphics from the company at the Game Developers Conference 2015 this week.
