  • AMD RDNA3 GPUs with DisplayPort 2.0?

The new standard was officially announced in 2019, but it isn’t until now we start to hear about technologies and possible hardware support for the new display connection standard.

DisplayPort 2.0 extends Ultra High Bit Rate support up to 20 Gbit/s per lane. This means that the data rate goes up to 77.37 Gbit/s (80 Gbit/s total rates), almost three times as high and as DisplayPort 1.4a. The new standard is capable of supporting a 10K display with an uncompressed stream at 60 Hz or alternatively two 4K displays at 144 Hz. With Display Stream Compression (DSC) it supports even higher resolutions.

The most recent patch to the AMD GPU driver appears to be the groundwork for future generations of AMD Radeon graphics cards. Patches do not specify which architecture will be supported, but since AMD is not expected to launch anything else than CDNA2 compute architecture later this year and its gaming RDNA3 series next year, it is quite easy to guess that these patches are for RDNA3.
