I own a HP ENVY x360 13z with a ryzen 7 2700u and 8gb of ram. I read in other forums how people received much better performance when using the laptop unplugged. I personally tested this and concluded that it was probably the CPU undervolting or just dialing back a bit on battery. So I tried running some benchmarks while changing the power plan settings and testing plugged in vs unplugged. (I am aware that the power plan settings are not actually undervolting or overvolting the CPU)
Here are my findings:
UNIGINE SUPERPOSITION: 720p low (GPU Test)
plugged in default power options: 2658 Min:100% CPU Max:100% CPU
unplugged default power options: 3689 Min:100% CPU Max:100% CPU
plugged in default power options: 4688 Min:5% CPU Max:100% CPU
unplugged default power options: 3821 Min:5% CPU Max:100% CPU
plugged in custom power options: 3951 Min:5% CPU Max:75% CPU
unplugged custom power options: 3729 Min:5% CPU Max:75% CPU
plugged in custom power options: 4027 Min:5% CPU Max:60% CPU
unplugged custom power options: 3619 Min:5% CPU Max:60% CPU
plugged in custom power options: 3988 Min:5% CPU Max:50% CPU
unplugged custom power options: 3633 Min:5% CPU Max:50% CPU
CINEBENCH R15: All Cores (CPU Test)
plugged in default power options: 599 Min:100% CPU Max:100% CPU
unplugged default power options: 581 Min:100% CPU Max:100% CPU
plugged in custom power options: 358 Min:5% CPU Max:75% CPU
unplugged custom power options: 359 Min:5% CPU Max:75% CPU
plugged in custom power options: 357 Min:5% CPU Max:60% CPU
unplugged custom power options: 358 Min:5% CPU Max:60% CPU
plugged in custom power options: 360 Min:5% CPU Max:50% CPU
unplugged custom power options: 359 Min:5% CPU Max:50% CPU
As you can see, with these new power plan settings you can get as high as a 51% performance increase in gpu performance. I did these tests with force installed 18.12.3 Desktop RX Vega drivers which also will increase graphical performance. If you want learn how to force install the drivers use this amazing guide by u/Art_that_Killz here https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comment..._1811_drivers/. I would recommend (At least for the 2700u) to go with a power plan with 5% min and 75% max because those yielded the best results in both plugged in and unplugged.
(these are my personal findings and may not work of be the same on your machine)
Edit:TLDR: Forcibly telling my laptop to stop focusing on the CPU and share some of that little 15w TDP with the GPU allowing it to clock a lot higher.
