When making memory modules that are tip-toeing the very edge of what is possible, it takes a lot of time and some very talented people. We’re lucky enough to have one of these people in Michal Nowicki. Michal was kind enough to give me a bit of time to discuss our latest and greatest Dominator GTX DDR3 memory module, the GTX4 — with operation guaranteed up to 2533 MHz.

Q: What is your job here at Corsair?
A: I am an Engineering Specialist at Corsair. My day to day responsibilities are focused around DRAM Product Development. Anytime you hear about Corsair memory products reaching another milestone of performance leadership with the Dominator GT and GTX product lines, or a high-density 24GB Dominator DDR3 memory kit, there is very good chance I had a part in the engineering effort to bring those products to end-users.
Q: Can you give me some details about Dominator GTX4? What are the specs? What DRAM IC’s are we using?

A: Corsair Dominator GTX4 is the latest, greatest, and meanest creation of Corsair labs! Weren’t you impressed by Corsair introducing DDR3-2400 products to market not that long ago? Well, this time around we decided to push the limits even further and introduce overclocking enthusiasts worldwide to DDR3-2533 at CL9! The DRAM ICs used to build Dominator GTX4 are made by Powerchip Semiconductor. The timing specifications for Dominator GTX4 are 9-11-10-30, yet it still requires only 1.65V to operate in dual-channel configuration on P55 platforms! How about that — Corsair has pushed the envelope even further!
Q: What details can you share about the testing process that goes into making these ridiculously fast memory modules? How many chips that you test actually will run at this amazing speed?

A: The DRAM chips we use to build the Dominator GTX4 DDR3 memory modules are literally the cream of the cream of the crop. Multiple screening and sorting steps are involved, using actual motherboards, and carefully selected and characterized Intel® Core™ i7 processors. We utilize specially designed DRAM socket modules which allow us to test DRAM chips individually in the same motherboards that end-users will use, before we even build them into modules. That way every single DRAM chip that ends up being used on a final DIMM is guaranteed to be the fastest of the fast. At the end of the day, only a very small percentage of the components that go through the screening process are actually selected. That’s the main reason why the Dominator GTX4 DDR3 memory is produced in very limited quantities.
Q: Along with screening the IC’s, do we have to screen the motherboards as well? What motherboards are we currently using for this process?

A: Yes, in order to create reliable testing platform, we needed to first characterize several motherboards, and determine if they meet our requirements. In most stages of our Dominator GTX4 testing process we utilize the fastest of our Gigabyte™ P55-UD4P and P55-UD5 motherboards, paired up with specially selected Intel Core i7-860 and i7-870 processors.
Q: What kind of challenges do we face when screening these parts?
A: I think that when it comes to the biggest challenge we’ve been facing when engineering Dominator GTX4 memory, I would definitely say that platform limitations take the cake! Dominator GTX4 DDR3 memory stretches the boundaries of what currently available CPUs and motherboards can handle. We’re confident that Dominator GTX4 is an extremely fast product, and it will need a matching platform to fully show its potential.
