Warning!
Many counterfeit audio cables are now appearing in the marketplace. Most are sold as used cables over the internet. The fakes shown here mimic Cardas cables, but we have seen counterfeits of other high end cable manufacturers.
The first four photographs show a set of used, counterfeit Golden Reference Speaker cables a Cardas Distributor stopped one of his customers from purchasing. The extraordinary lengths to which this counterfeiter has gone, almost insures there are additional counterfeit Golden Reference Speaker cables being offered for sale. From external and internal comparisons between Cardas Golden Reference speaker cable and the counterfeit you can see the differences and similarities.
All the counterfeit cables we have seen are of very poor quality and make no attempt to provide any sonic performance. These images show several counterfeit cables found on popular, audio web sites. When we find counterfeits, we request the site remove them, but it's a big internet and we won't catch them all.
If you intend to buy used Cardas cables, first check them against the images in the Product Section of our site. Look at the cable's color, the markings, the connectors, the shrink tube, everything you can, to determine their authenticity. Check the rest of this Support section to see the changes we have made to our cable cosmetics and packaging over the years. If you have purchased cables and are not sure they are genuine Cardas, take them to your nearest Cardas Dealer or send them to us for Certification.
Warning! - Cardas vs. Counterfeit Spades
The counterfeit spades are thinner than Cardas spades. They have a poor finish and the Nautilus logo stamp is very crude.
Warning! - Cardas vs. Counterfeit Leads
Cardas cable leads are larger than the counterfeit leads because Cardas uses twelve, large, 11 gauge conductors where the counterfeit uses only three, approximately, 20 gauge wires.
Warning! - Cardas vs. Counterfeit Shrink Tubing
Cardas shrink tubing fits tightly around the end of the cable for strain relief. The counterfeit shrink tubing fits poorly and the printing is very dark. The red printing on the Cardas shrink is difficult to match. As of October, 2004, the color of the shrink tubing changed to Black with Gold logo and type.
Warning! - Cardas vs. Counterfeit Cable Jacket
There are directional arrows on the counterfeit cable. Cardas Golden Reference speaker and interconnect cables are non directional, so the arrows are unnecessary and incorrect. Golden Reference power cords, which have a fixed directionality, do have directional arrows for terminating purposes.
Warning! - Cardas vs. Counterfeit Cable Conductors
The Cardas lay-up has twelve, 11 gauge, Golden Section Stranded conductors and Teflon© binding. The counterfeit cable has three small, 20 gauge conductors, paper wrap, and a piece of plain steel cable used as the positive lead and to give weight and stiffness. That failed, by the way, as one of the obvious differences between cables is weight. A 1.5 meter pair of Golden Reference speaker cables weigh 3.3 lbs and the counterfeits weigh significantly less.
Warning! - Audio Web Site Counterfeit Cable
This counterfeit cable recently appeared for sale on an audio web site. The shrink tubing, the connectors, nothing about it resembles a Cardas cable.
Warning! - Counterfeit Cable for sale on eBay
This counterfeit Hexlink 5-C cable recently appeared for sale on eBay's web site. The color doesn't match Cardas Hexlink 5-C cable and we have never used WBT connectors.
Warning! - Audio Web Site Counterfeit Cable
This counterfeit Hexlink Golden 5-C cable recently appeared for sale on an audio web site. The color and jacket printing don't match our discontinued Hexlink Golden 5-C cable.
Warning! - Close-up of counterfeit Hexlink Golden 5-C
This is a close-up of the counterfeit Hexlink 5-C, showing very poor conductor construction.
Warning! - Cardas vs. Counterfeit Cross Cable
In May of 2005 an audiophile in Holland bought these counterfeit Cross cables off the Audiogon web site. It's such a good job of counterfeiting, when we received it for authentication we had to compare it to one of our Cross cables to find the differences.
Warning! - Cardas vs. Counterfeit Cross Printing
The printing on the counterfeit cable is very good. The type face is similar and the directional arrows almost exact. The Cardas Cross cable is 0.46" OD, the counterfeit is only 0.34".
Warning! - Cardas vs. Counterfeit Cross Shrink
The counterfeit's shrink tubing is printed well. The black shrink has now replaced the grey shrink.
Warning! - Cardas vs. Counterfeit Cross Cross Section
A cross section of the counterfeit cable shows it is basically zip cord with two filler tubes.
Warning! - Counterfeit Golden Reference Interconnect
This pair of counterfeit Golden Reference Interconnects were purchased from a non-Cardas dealer in the U.S., by a man in Holland. They have a rough jacket with very poor printing. They have directional arrows printed on them, which is incorrect, since Golden Reference is non directional and it has no arrows.
Warning! - Counterfeit Cut-away
A cut-away of these Counterfeit Golden Reference Interconnects shows six, sub 22 awg. conductors and an 18 awg. central ground.
Warning! - Cardas vs. Counterfeit Golden Cross
The printing on the counterfeit cable is not very good. The jacket has a dry, matte finish. Cardas has never used the word "Series" on any of it's cables. The type face is similar, but the directional arrows don't match.
Note: If you are not sure the used cable you are purchasing is genuine Cardas, even after comparing it to the images on our web site and checking the information in our Certification section, please take it to your nearest Cardas Dealer or send it to us for certification. Note: If you are not sure the used cable you are purchasing is genuine Cardas, even after comparing it to the imasges on our web site and checking the information in our Certification section, please take it to your nearest Cardas Dealer or send it to us for certification. See "Certification Service".

Kimber Kable 2
KCAG
A - The label of this fake cable uses small letters - Kcag. Genuine one will have all capital letters - KCAG.
Update: I've been made aware that these scammers have reprint their labels with KCAG, all caps. So, check out part B below.
B - Logo is different
C - Fake cable's conductors are braided tightly. On a pair of genuine KCAG, one can see more spaces in between the 3 conductors as shown in the 1st picture above.
A - The braiding of this fake version looks really funny... I'm out of words.
B - Not real...
C - Now they change to all caps, but with wrong font type.
________________________________________
KCAG
A - 3 ridges compared to 2 on the original
B - Again, this counterfeit KCAG's conductors are too tightly braided.
________________________________________
Silver Streak
This is the latest sleeve design of Silver Streak, showing signal flow direction.
A - small hand of the alphabet 'k' is pointing upwards.
B - we call this the fake 'k' :-)
C - Logo is different too
D - 3 ridges compared to 2 on the original
E - The 3 conductors are too tightly braided together. Genuine stuff should have properly spaced 'holes' within the conductors' interaction, as shown below:

PBJ
This is the latest sleeve design of PBJ, showing signal flow direction.
Again, the logo is different and braiding is too tight. Can you spot them?
A - fake label, fake cable
B - If you check with Kimber, you'll know that Ultratike RCA connectors are not an option for PBJ.

Tonik
A - The letter T's top is shorter
B - Space between n & k is too wide
C - Logo is different
D - Again, fake cable's braiding is too tight

Genuine stuff.
Can you spot them?
Kimber Kable
The easiest way to differentiate is by looking at the logo on the heat shrinks. It's like your own signature which is difficult to imitate.
The image below shows how a genuine item should look like:
Genuine heat shrink labels on 8TC cables. If you look closely, the upper and lower half of the 'K' logo is separated by a very thin horizontal line / split.
A - It's not difficult to see that thick horizontal gap. Isn't it?
A - Another thick gap for your viewing pleasure :-)
B - This piece of fake banana plug has an extra hole!
________________________________________
12TC
Genuine 12TC - it's braided in such a way that each conductor is quite well distanced from one another. And it's quite a fat cable.
Fake 12TC - the conductors are tightly weaved against one another. And it's smaller size in diameter compared to genuine cable.
Fake - the thickest conductor in this counterfeit cable seems to be on steroid...

PostMaster spade
A - If you look closely, some parts of the alphabets don't join together. R is the most obvious one. Can you spot the others?
